The Creative City is a charitable nonprofit community-based arts centre that has operated out of 1843 Hamilton Street for almost 15 years, in a third story walk-up with no elevator. We are moving to a new home at 1819 Cornwall Street, a two-story wheelchair-accessible building with an elevator, parking in the back, 5000 square feet per floor, and a vault in the basement that we’re converting to a recording studio.
The new building will feature our public programming on the main floor:
• art gallery
• performance venue
• classroom
• artist-in-residence studio
The basement will house our recording and production studio, as well as our long-time tenants Articulate Ink Printmaking Collective. The second floor will provide administration office space for Creative City Centre, Sakewewak Artist Collective, Saskatchewan Arts Alliance, Commonweal Community Arts and other organizations!
The building is conveniently located just steps from every major bus route in the city, as well as next door to a parkade for those who will drive downtown for our events. It is less than a block north of Victoria Park and the Plaza, where we have presented numerous events over the years, and will continue to do so from our new home.
We all need to find ways to experience creativity, whether through listening to an intimate music concert or learning how to play guitar; hearing an incredible spoken word poet or trying your own hand at creative writing; appreciating a visual art exhibition or dabbling in watercolours or life drawing; or learning about and experiencing new cultures through art in any medium.
When we were living in lockdown, the pandemic taught us we needed art more than ever to cope. Now, with multiple wars, economic and environmental crises in the news every day, we all need art in our lives. We are committed to ensuring our programming is accessible and affordable for everyone.
Building community:
We have been instrumental in developing communities of spoken word artists, musicians, printmakers, visual artists, fashion designers, and art supporters in every medium. It’s so important to find your people, to make friends and grow relationships no matter who you are or what you do. Finding your people is easier to do through programming and events like we offer.
We have played a leading role in developing our next generation of musicians, poets, spoken word artists, printmakers and visual artists. We will continue to prioritize professional development opportunities and initiatives that support the development of our next generation of creative people in Saskatchewan. We support artists of all shapes and sizes, including Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, newcomers, fresh out of school, emerging, mid-career and established artists. (Pictured: one of our spoken word youth teams)
A creative hub:
With this new facility, we will also be providing a home for the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance, Commonweal Community Arts, Articulate Ink Printmaking Collective and other non-profit arts organizations. We are stronger together and can work collectively to provide more programs and services for Regina, sharing resources and manpower.
Downtown revitalization:
We have been contributing to downtown revitalization since we opened in 2011, and we anticipate our partnerships with Regina Downtown and other organizations will continue to grow and evolve as we move into a bigger, better facility. We anticipate reaching 200 events per year within our first year in our new space and continuing to present events for decades to come.
Economic impact:
The economic impact of the arts has long been undervalued and underestimated. In the past five years alone, we’ve brought hundreds of thousands of dollars from federal grants into our community, which are paid out in artist fees, materials and salaries, that in turn help folks pay rent and buy groceries and live, having a direct and indirect impact on our local and provincial economy.
We are looking for corporate partners and have a variety of sponsorship and naming opportunities available to suit your marketing and corporate social responsibility budget. If you would like a tour of the space before renovations begin or would like to meet to discuss our commitment to grow the creative sector in Regina and Saskatchewan, we would love to connect.
We plan to be open in our new home by the fall of 2025, presenting a robust season of music concerts, poetry slams, art exhibitions and artist talks, workshops and more for the people of Regina. Help us ensure that art is for everyone. And come join us in our bigger, better community arts centre downtown.
Individual donations can be made through the form below. We now have official charitable status, so we can issue tax receipts for any donations over $10. Donations of $1000 or more will be recognized with a plaque on our Wall of Fame in our new front entrance.
